The field school is a collaborative project. Many individuals and institutions are involved in this process and we will like to thank everyone who made this project successful. But the heroes of this project are the students. Everything you see here: every bit of data collection, analysis, dissemination, documentation, and organization is because of the diligence and dedication of these individuals. They did all this in six weeks, working continuously, some driving more than an hour daily, back and forth, to get the work done. We thank the residents and organizations from the neighborhood. The Sherman Park Community Association, The Center Peace Neighborhood, the Community Baptist Church, Matt Bohlman and Mark at the Finney Library, Dominic Inouye of ZipMKE, Neighborhood News Services and the members of the Men’s Network — who provided us with time, resources and knowledge with much patience and poise. You were perfect hosts, learned teachers, trustworthy friends, and wise guides and we learnt a lot from you. You didn’t lecture us, rather you inspired us with quiet acts and by the principles you live by. From Ms. Cheri Fuqua we learnt what citizenship means, from Ms. Tremerell Robinson we learnt what leadership entails. From Ms. Jackie Smith we learnt how patience and courage is practiced in daily life. From Fred and Mary Kaems the lesson was of stewardship. Reverend Christie Melby-Gibbons never preached, yet she touched our hearts in ways that taught us how morals and ethics work when we relate to each other, and the Men’s network filled our hearts and stomachs and taught us how to acknowledge and explore our often ignored past. The Community Baptist Church provided us with goods and resources — in sharing they taught us how neighborliness and hospitality is practiced in real life.
Thank you all for reminding us how this world is a wonderful place and that our history and present is also strewn with kindness, wisdom, hope and determination.
