The Language of Caring

This podcast discusses the idea behind caring and how it is defined in a community, and how community members specifically embody it in Sherman Park. The issue of a perceived "lack of care" is also examined. Caring is not a commonly examined topic in academic research, let alone the actions that go behind it, so there is much to be gained from listening to the grassroots discussion. Listed below are the clips in order of which they appear in this podcast; click on them to read more about each community member.

Learning from Sherman Park

I am a research scholar from China and I have been in the United States for less than a year. I had heard of the 2016 Sherman Park unrest and was interested in examining what transpired since that event. After the unrest, the residents in Sherman Park came together to clean up their neighborhood and work collaboratively towards social reform and development. I interviewed community stakeholders such as block groups, homeowners, tenants, church congregations, and business owners in order to examine how a group of community residents and organizations engaged with each other to strengthen neighborhood solidarity and revitalize their community.
